AFT Local 943


EXECUTIVE BOARD

   

Elaine Barlos -- President

 

Elaine Barlos was elected on December 11, 2012 and became Local 943 president officially on February 12, 2013.  She has been a teacher and Local 943 member in Oak Lawn-Hometown District #123 for the past 15 years and currently teaches 7th grade science.  Elaine is also serving her third term as council president of SD#123. During her involvement in the union, Elaine has served on several negotiation teams, has been a building representative, Local 943 senator, and a delegate to the IFT state and AFT national conventions.  Elaine lives in Oak Lawn with her son, Andrew, and their dog, Maddie.

 

Karen Kendall -- Vice-President -- Political Action

 

Karen Kendall, Orland Park District 135 PSRP vice-president, was appointed to the Local 943 Executive Board in 2003. In September 2008, the Local 943 senate voted to have her complete the unexpired term of vice president of political action.  Karen was the head bookkeeper in District 135 until she retired in 2017. Karen has participated in contract negotiations as a member of several bargaining teams and is currently a member of the IFT PSRP committee.

   

Mary Stockwell -- Vice-President -- Educational and Professional Issues

Mary Stockwell, vice president of educational and professional issues, was elected in 2003.  Mary has been involved in the AFT ER&D (now TEACH) program almost since its inception and currently serves as the Local 943 Coordinator. She has received extensive training from the AFT and IFT.   She does an outstanding presentation on classroom management at our annual New Teacher Workshop. 

   

Bob Goldsbury -- Vice-President — Communications and Public Relations 

 

Bob Goldsbury, vice president — communications and public relations since 1985, was an intermediate learning disabilities resource teacher in Alsip District 126 . He has held the positions of treasurer, vice-president, and negotiator. In addition to his Local 943 responsibilities, Bob has served as Sergeant At Arms at many AFT conventions.

   

  

Dawn Stanovich  -- Secretary

 

Dawn Stanovich has been the secretary of Local 943 since 1994. She is the past-president of Ridgeland District 122 Council which includes teachers, para-professionals and most recently, custodians. Dawn began her career as a fourth grade teacher and then moved to the media center. She also served as the technology coordinator for District 122.

   

  

Daniel Leib -- Treasurer

 

Daniel Leib was hired as a teacher in Orland Park School District #135 in 2000 and introduced to Local 943 through the new teacher breakfast.  He has been a union activist ever since. He serves as a building representative, grievance committee member, political action committee member, Local 943 senator, convention delegate to the IFT state and AFT national conventions, and frequent lobby day participant.  Most recently he has been appointed to serve on the IFT’s PreK-12 issues committee.  Daniel currently teaches 7th grade math at Orland Junior High, is married, and has two children.


   



UNIVERSAL TEAM

   

                                  Rebbie Kinsella -- Team Member


Rebbie Kinsella was appointed to the IFT Paraprofessionals and School-Related Personnel Committee in 2014. In this capacity, Rebbie joins a large statewide committee which exchanges information, discusses issues affecting PSRPs, and makes recommendations to the IFT Executive Board. Rebbie has been the Council Treasurer for D123 Oak Lawn-Hometown since 2011, currently serves as a Local 943 Senator, and was part of a team instrumental in organizing D123's support staff in 2009. She has served as a building rep and as a member of a PSRP evaluation process committee, attended a national AFT PSRP conference in March 2011, and has been on two contract negotiating teams, with one of them lasting around 18 months in negotiations. She is a computer tech at Kolmar and Sward schools in Oak Lawn.
