Southwest Suburban Federation of Teachers

AFT Local 943

Who we are...

The Southwest Suburban Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 943 is an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, the Illinois Federation of Teachers, the Illinois AFL-CIO, and the Chicago Federation of Labor. Chartered in 1946, AFT Local 943 has been serving our members and participating in the Labor Movement for almost 60 years. Local 943 is the sixth largest local in the IFT and one of the fifty largest locals in the AFT.

Members of Local 943, including teachers, paraprofessionals, secretaries, clerks, maintenance and custodial personnel, cooks, and media assistants/aides benefit from the services of knowledgeable and experienced officers. We organize new members, develop training programs for pertinent issues, and strive to improve communications among our members on all affiliate levels on issues related to bargaining, grievance handling, legislative activities, and general guidance pertaining to employment issues. Local 943 shares a regional office of the IFT in Orland Park which provides meeting space and secretarial services to facilitate local/council business.

Local 943 members are represented by senators elected in each council. The Senate Meetings are held at the Orland Park office six times a year (September, October, December, February, April, and May) on the second Tuesday of the month at 4:30 p.m. At these meetings the officers and union representatives from each council conduct the business of the Local and gather the latest information on current issues in education and labor. We welcome the participation of all Local 943 members at these meetings. However, only those duly elected or appointed are eligible to vote.
