FOR THOSE RETIREES WHO SUBSTITUTE

Q:  What happens if a retired member is substitute teaching.  Is she covered under the AFT liability insurance?

A:  The AFT does not intend to cover retirees under liability insurance. If someone is working and needs coverage they should be an active member paying dues.

In other words, if a teacher retires and gets rehired as a substitute and, as a substitute, he/she is included in the bargaining unit, he/she can obtain the liability insurance coverage by becoming an active, dues-paying member of the local (at whatever level their salary dictates).

If a teacher retires and gets rehired as a substitute and, as a substitute, he/she is not included in the bargaining unit, he/she can obtain the liability insurance coverage by becoming an AFT Associate Member (at the comprehensive benefits package membership level - $70/year or $120/2years).

NOTE:  Only those NOT eligible for membership in an IFT local can become an AFT Associate Member.    Whether or not a substitute teacher is included in the bargaining unit has to be researched and determined accordingly.  An application to become an AFT Associate Member can be obtained by calling Local 943 at 708.633.0943 x221.
